Finger Systems

Finger systems --- Signing --- Days in a month --- Chisenbop --- Multiplication --- Up to 100,000

Here is the most impressive counter of all! This is a Chinese method of counting to 100,000 on one hand. The little finger gives the units, as described on the left. The points marked are on the left, middle or right of the finger joints. The ring finger gives 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80 and 90 in a similar way. The middle finger covers the hundreds, again in a similar way. The fore finger does the thousands, and the thumb does the ten thousands. The top of the thumb is 100,000! If you move the mouse over the hand on the right, you can try to find the different values. Click in the right places to build up a total. If you click on a finger, you will replace any previous value of that finger.

I'm not sure how you use this method. Perhaps you use the fingers on your other hand to touch the correct part of the hand. Then you can add another number onto it, a finger at a time, by counting up and down the finger. This explains why the numbers go down the finger, then up, and finally down again. It's claimed that you can do multiplication as well, but I think it would be easier to find a calculator!
